Angela Merkel is a German politician and leader of the Christian Democratic Union. She’s the current Chancellor of Germany, the first women to hold that office. Merkel was born Angela Dorothea Kasner on July 17, 1954 in Hamburg, Germany. Her father, Horst, was a Lutheran pastor, and her mother, Herlind, an English teacher. She has two siblings, Markus and Irene. She was raised north of Berlin in a town called Templin. Merkel earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Leipzig in 1978. She completed her doctorate in quantum chemistry from the German Academy of Sciences, Berlin in 1986.
CAREER
Prior to politics, Merkel worked as a research scientist at the German Academy of Sciences (1978-90). She joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1989. She became a member of the German Bunderstag in January 1991. Merkel served as minister for women and youth (1991-1994) and as minister for the environment (1994-1998). She was elected as general secretary of the CDU in 1998. She held that office from November 1998 through April 2000.
Merkel was named leader of the CDU in April 2000. She’s the first female to lead the CDU. She made history again in 2005 as Germany’s first female chancellor. She was sworn into office on November 22, 2005. She won re-election in 2009 and 2013. During her tenure she’s met with world leaders like George W. Bush, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Merkel was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2011. She was named person of the year by Time magazine in 2015.
