Jalil Hutchins Net Worth – $3 million

What is Jalil Hutchins’ net worth?

Introduction

Jalil Hutchins is an American singer and founding member of the American hip-hop group Whodini, a hip-hop group that was formed in 1981 in New York City.

Whodini was one of the first hip-hop groups to use dancers in their stage shows.

The Origin Story

Jalil Hutchins was born on November 29, 1964, in the United States.

There is limited information online pertaining to his childhood and family life. “My childhood was just as ordinary as the next man,” Jalil told Alabama Local.

Aside from being drawn to performative arts from a young age, he has not invited the public into his private life.

Since he spent his childhood singing, he always knew he would pursue a career as a musician.

Following his high school graduation is when he began to take it seriously.

Hutchins’ musical career really took at in 1982, when he was 22 years old.

He formed the hip-hop group “Whodini,” which consisted of Hutchins as the main vocalist, DJ Drew Carter, and John Fletcher as the co-vocalist.

John “Ecstasy” Fletcher passed away in 2020. He was 56.

The trio was signed to Jive Records and signed a contract that obligated them to begin recording and producing albums immediately.

The hip-hop group rode the waves of the 1980s thundering and prolific hip-hop scene and found success almost immediately.

They became one of the first aspiring hip-hop groups to infuse an R&B sound into their tracks, which paved the way for future bands, including New Edition and Boyz II Men.

Hutchins, being the lead vocalist of the group, made some of the major decisions on which songs to add to their albums and which ones would debut as lead singles.

He had exceptional taste because some of the hit songs he chose made it on multiple Billboard lists, including “Freaks Come Out at Night,” “Five Minutes of Funk,” “Friends,” “The Haunted House of Rock,” and “Magic’s Wand.”

“Friends” is a skeptical storytelling song about deceit.

Hutchins and his band went on to remain successful for nearly 2 decades, albeit their fame came to an end in the 90s, they still released an album.

In 1983, one year following the band’s inception, they released the self-titled album “Whodini.” This was their huge break in the industry and made them a household name.

They released “Escape,” their second debut album, the following year, which was a huge hit with their fans.

1985 was a leap year but was spent touring and giving live performances.

“Back in Black” was released in 1986, and although it included some of their top singles, the album itself didn’t perform as well.

Despite their declining success, this didn’t stop them.

They hit up the studio and recorded their fourth album, “Open Sesame.” This would be the last album they released for the next four years.

Hutchins and his band took some time to themselves following the album promotion and tour and went off the radar.

They did release singles periodically, including “Anyway I Gotta Swing It” for the A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child movie soundtrack. This was a significant hit in large part due to the success of the motion picture.

Hutchins, who spent his life singing, had enough time off, and by the early 90s, he convinced his band members to record another album.

They released “Bag-A-Trix” in 1991 through MCA Records. The album was not much of a success, and their comeback attempt was not as fruitful as they had hoped.

And again, they fell off the radar and were dropped by their record label. But this wasn’t it for Hutchins.

After a few years of making no music, he convinced the band to attempt yet another comeback.

“It All Comes Down to the Money” was released in 1994, their first single in 3 years.  It was co-produced by Public Enemy DJ Terminator X and was released on his album “Super Bad.”

While they had commercial success with 1994 single, they still failed to make a significant comeback.

They spent the next year in the studio recording, what would be their sixth and final album.

“Six” was released in 1996. The only single that had success was “Keep Running Back.” It went on to appear briefly on the R&B chart but quickly booted off.

It took the failure of this album for Hutchins to accept that his musical career as the lead singer of his band was no more. Although a hard pill to swallow for someone who spent the majority of their life recording and performing music, he moved on.

Like all bands, they reconnected nearly two decades later and went on a few national tours. They perform a lot of their old singles.

And considering their significant commercial success in the 80s, they’re still a highly revered high-hop band, and most of their hit singles are still played on hip-hop and R&B radio stations.
