ORIGIN
Sonny James was an American country singer, songwriter and music producer. He achieved legendary status from 1950s-1980s with a string of chart topping Billboard singles. He was born James Hugh Loden on May 1, 1928 in Hackleburg, Alabama. His parents, Archie and Della Loden were also musician. Growing up, James started playing the Mandolin at the age of 3. In 1933, he formed the music group ‘Sonny Loden and the Southerners’ with his family. They were offered daily spots on several radio stations including WMSD-AM, KLCN and WSGN. The group disbanded in 1950.

CAREER
James moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1951 and was later signed to Capitol Records. His first major hit single “Young Love” was released in 1956. The song was a commercial success with over one million copies sold. He was featured on an array of television programs including The Ed Sullivan Show and Hee Haw. In 1964, James joined the vocal group, The Southern Gentlemen, and released the hit song “You’re The Only World I Know” two months later. He became a music legend with the release of 16 consecutive Billboard #1 singles from 1967-1971, a feat no other solo artist has accomplished. James was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1961. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2006.

Sonny James died on February 22, 2016 at the age of 87. He died of natural causes at the Alive Hospice of Nashville. James was 6ft 1in tall and had a net worth of $4 million. He was married to “Doris Shrode” from 1957 until his death.
