Hurricane Calvin strengthened into a Category 3 storm on Friday with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph but was still expected to weaken as it continued on a path straight for the Hawaiian islands.

Still in the Eastern Pacific Ocean about 1,210 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, the storm was moving west-northwest at 16 mph as of 5 p.m. Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“Calvin is forecast to move across the central Pacific Ocean and approach the Hawaiian Islands early next week,” the National Hurricane Center said. “It is too early to determine the exact location and magnitude of potential impacts given uncertainties in the track, intensity and structure of Calvin as it approaches the islands.”

Hurricane Calvin is forecast to weaken over the next couple of days as it passes over cooler water and eventually become a tropical depression — which means winds of less than 39 mph — by the time it passes over Hawaii island and Maui County around Wednesday, hurricane center forecast models show.

Swells generated by Hurricane Calvin are expected to reach the islands early next week and are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, the hurricane center warned.

State officials plan to enclose the checkpoint and install air conditioning, as well as construct a new, two-story screening checkpoint at the other end of the ticket lobby in hopes of reducing wait times and making conditions more comfortable for travelers at the state’s second-busiest airport. — The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo
